Apple made a drastic change to its phone lineup when it decided to
launch a plastic made unibody iphone. Taking inspiration from the Lumia series
phone apple decided to make plastics phones which actually don’t look cheap. It
launched it by the name of iPhone 5c (“C” standing for colour). It has ditched
the metal body frame used in the iPhone 5s or Apple’s latest flagship phone the
6 and the 6 plus.
iPhone 5C: Various Colour Options. |
The iPhone 5C is quite well built as
we would expect from apple. The phone is offered in 5 different colours: pink,
blue, yellow, green and white. They are fun to look it, the colours are however
not that eye catching and bright they are more like pastel in shade. There are
no gaps or inconsistencies in the border between the plastic back and glass
front, no flexing of the body. But glossy plastic was never going to feel as
“Jhakaas” as the aluminum rear of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.
iPhone 5C: Compact Size Phone. |
The iPhone 5C has a 4-inch
screen. It’s smaller than every Android phone at that price, but quality-wise
it’s “bawal”. It has a ppi of 326 the standard for retina display. There isn’t
much of an upgrade from the iPhone 5 in terms of display. The 5C is an iPhone
5, with just the outer body distinguishing them. The internals of the 5C are
similar to the 5, however there are slight improvement in the display quality.
It has the same processor as the 5 and houses 1 GB of Ram. The ios 7, has been
the major plus which makes the 5C work faster and better than the 5, even
though they have the same processing capabilities.
The camera app has got a huge
upgrade and has various new feature such as various filters, option to turn on
and off the HDR and the panorama mode. However there is no hardware upgrade
than the iphone 5. The image capture and processing is very quick in comparison
to other phones. It is still is an excellent camera for an “aam admi”.
iPhone 5C : Camera Sample. |
Taking a
look at some of its basic features:
Features
|
Details
|
Remarks
|
Screen
|
4 inch Led display
|
At 326 ppi, it is a great display for the
iphone 5c.
|
Os
|
IOS 7, upgradable to 8.4
|
Having similar specs as the 5, still
coupled with the ios 7 it is faster.
|
Camera
|
8 Mp back and 1.2Mp front
|
There isn’t any major upgrade here, it is
an average camera and the flash isn’t that good either.
|
Battery
|
1510 mAh
|
The battery lasts around 9-10 hrs on an
average use. The recent updates have increased it though.
|
Connectivity
|
4G LTE and Wifi.
|
The iPhone fails to impress in this field
as it continues to lack both NFC & Bluetooth to connect to other devices.
|
One of the few updates on the 5C
is its battery. The battery is sufficient enough to last a day at moderate use.
The ear piece speaker is loud enough and clear. One major issue of call drops
faced by iphone 5 user is solved on this one. There are hardly any call drops.
The iPhone 5C is an interesting phone, but mostly because of the way it alters
Apple’s product strategy rather than “khud ke wajh se”.
Let’s have a look at the pros and
cons of the 5C:
Pros:
•Durable
•Colour options
•Better front camera.
•Less Expensive than the 5s.
|
Cons:
•Plastic design may feel tacky or
undesirable.
•Rear camera isn’t that good.
•Case and external battery of 5 aren’t
compatible with the 5C.
|
Final verdict:
Aside from an improved front camera and the new
plastic design, the iPhone 5C is similar to the iPhone 5. Very similar. That’s
no bad thing when considered from the perspective of what the phone is actually
like to use. However at the price of Rs. 37,500 (initial launch) it has to
compete directly with Android greats the HTC One and Samsung galaxy S4. It’s a
good upgrade from the iPhone 4 or the 4s but definitely not from the iphone 5.
